Quek Leng Chan
The head of the Quek family, one of the richest dynasties in Malaysia, likes to bet big. Tan Sri Quek Leng Chan has built one of the largest businesses in the country which reaches its tentacles out across the globe.
He is one of the most private tycoons in Malaysia, less well known outside Malaysia than even the late Tan Sri Loh Boon Siew, Tan SriLim Goh Tong or Robert Kuok.
He is notoriously media shy, but we do know that he likes a cigars and is a famous high roller at casinos in Las Vegas. He is a skilful mahjong player and claims that high stakes gambling allows him to unwind.
Quek is moving into Macau's gambling scene with a 8% Guoco-controlled Galaxy Mega Resort. The new resort is due to open in 2008 on the Cotai Strip in the former Portuguese enclave, now a Special Administrative Region of China.
Quek's casino in Macau is not his first venture into gambling. Quek has snapped up 25 of the 89 casino licences awarded in the Uk and owns the glitzy Claremont casino in Mayfair, London.
